If an animal has beliefs, desires, memory, and a sense of the future, it has inherent value. You cannot sacrifice an individual with inherent value for the greater good. It is never acceptable to kill a cow to feed a human, even if the cow had a lovely life, because killing violates the cow’s right to exist for its own sake.
