Flashback to 2010. Kabir's father, a mine safety inspector, discovers that a foreign mining corporation is secretly excavating a rare earth mineral (Lutetium-176) beneath the town. The mineral, when heated, releases a psychoactive, amnesia-inducing gas—the "smoke." His father tries to leak the report. That night, the mine "accidentally" collapses. He never comes home.
