After William the Conqueror took the throne, he formalized the role. The became the undisputed master of the county. He collected the ferm (tax rent), commanded the militia ( posse comitatus – the power of the county), and ran the local court. For centuries, the Sheriff was the most feared and hated man in the county precisely because he had so much power.
