Madlib is the ultimate hype man for other MCs—by getting out of their way. With Med, he crafted The Comeback (2009), a dose of breezy Cali cool. But his second masterpiece collaboration is Piñata (2014) with Freddie Gibbs. Here, the dusty loops meet hard-boiled street narration.
