The story begins in the small, deeply religious town of . Five years ago, a tragic car accident killed four teenagers as they were driving home drunk from a party. In response, the town council—led by Reverend Shaw Moore—passed strict laws banning loud music, public dancing, and unsupervised gatherings of minors . The town has been emotionally frozen ever since.
Ren soon discovers that the town has banned dancing, as the local church community believes it to be sinful. Ren decides to challenge the town's ban and rallies a group of students, including Ariel Moore (played by Julianne Hough), the minister's daughter, to take up the cause.
