Benson’s group additivity method is a semi-empirical approach for estimating thermodynamic properties of organic molecules in the gas phase, including enthalpy of formation (ΔHf°), entropy (S°), and heat capacity (Cp°). This paper presents a detailed review of the theoretical foundations, mathematical formalism, application procedures, and limitations of Benson’s method, with emphasis on chemical calculations relevant to reaction engineering and mechanistic chemistry. A step-by-step calculation example is included.
